Start by using a few of our tips and tricks.  Learning to speak a foreign language fluently requires that you learn all the different aspects of it (vocabulary, grammar, conjugations, pronunciation). Help With Learning Algebra Pass the parcel After Mark Maclaine’s first blog post explaining how to understand the basics of algebra, he now goes into more depth using his ‘pass the parcel’ method in order to supply another method to help with learning algebra. As a kid I remember playing a game called “pass the parcel” which involved unwrapping a present layer by layer every time the music stopped. It’s one of those games kids play at parties, and can lead to tantrums…. But what has this got to do with algebra? Imagine that the side of the equation containing the unknown (the letter) is a bit like that parcel. It has been wrapped in a set of layers one by one. The order that it was wrapped in can be determined by BIDMAS or BODMAS. See my blog post on how to understand BIDMAS here: For example: 3m + 5 In this case, let’s say m = 10: the first thing we would do is multiply it by 3 (as multiplication comes before addition), and then we would add 5. Now if we were to try “unwrap” this in an equation, just like the parcel in the game, we would have to unwrap it in the reverse order: last layer first, and so on… As we can see the last layer to be wrapped was the “add 5”, so this is the first layer we take off. Only then can we remove the “multiply by 3”. If m was placed into the following equation, the first thing we could get rid of is the “add 5”. Remember, the opposite of adding 5 is subtracting it: From here we are now left with the final layer â€" this is the “multiply by 3”, so to get rid of that we do the opposite â€" we “divide by 3”. Now let’s look at a slightly more complicated question. In the case above, the w is first multiplied by 5, then you subtract 8 and only then divide everything by 4. This may be a little bit confusing; following the rules of BIDMAS, division normally comes first but because the whole sum  â€˜5w-8’ is divided by four (as if there were brackets/parentheses around it) this is done last. Remember: the first thing to unwrap is the last thing that was wrapped: This method takes a little time to get your head around, but once you have it, even hard questions (like the dreaded square roots!) become a whole lot easier. Let’s look at this final example: How has this been wrapped? First ‘m’ was multiplied by 3, then 4 was added 4 and only then was the square root of the whole thing put in. Like the previous example: normally when following the rules of BIDMAS, indices (squares, square roots and other powers/roots) come before multiplication and addition. However, because the whole sum ‘3m+4’ is contained inside the root sign (as if contained within brackets/parenthses) it is done first, and only then is it square-rooted. Now to unwrap the equation and solve it, we must do everything in reverse order. Note: the opposite of square-root is to square, and vice-versa. Because of my own personal  schedule and lifestyle, I only have an hour a day for a dedicated work out, and  am definitely not willing to go to a gym for it. And since I live in Texas, where an  average day is 100 degrees, nothing wilts my motivation more than looking at the  sun and just wanting to give up. For those of you who aren’t willing to shell out upwards of $50 dollars a month to  go to a gym or who don’t like to exercise outside, working out at home is the only  other option. If you’re lucky, you live on the first floor and can jump and stomp  around as loudly as you please. But, if you’re like me and you live on the second  or even third floor of an apartment complex, cardio is pretty much forbidden. Everyone knows that you have to incorporate a mixture of strength and cardio  exercises not just to lose fat, but also to maintain general fitness. Here are some  cardio exercises that will get your heart pumping without making your neighbors  wonder if they’re living next to the Juggernaut from X-Men. Elbow push-ups Get into push up position. Bring your right elbow to the floor, then your left, so  that you’re holding yourself up with just your elbows and feet in plank. From that position,  push yourself up back into push up position by first placing your right hand  exactly where your right elbow was, and following with the left hand. That entire  cycle equals one elbow push-up. Stationary shadow boxing Get into a wide squat, keeping your back straight and chest strong. Alternate  punches, going as hard as you can in intervals. Allow yourself some rest time in  between. This is a great way to get your heart rate up while producing as little  noise as possible! Stationary Lunges To amp up the intensity, get into a deep lunge and pulse your body up and down.  Switch legs and repeat. Your thighs should be burning by the end! You can also  get into a deep lunge with the right leg forward. Your left leg should be stretched  back straight. Touch the knee of your left leg to the floor and then back into its  original position, trying to keep the rest of your body still. Switch legs and repeat.  This one’s also a killer on your glutes. Hoverjacks Get into plank position, hands right beneath your shoulders. Jump with your legs  in and out, the same way you would a jumping jack, only you’re holding yourself  in a plank with your arms. Mountain Climbers Get into plank position, hands right beneath your shoulders. Bring your left foot  forward as close to your chest as possible, keeping your right leg straight back.  Jump to switch leg positions so that your right foot is forward and your left leg is  straight back. To modify this move, simply step instead of jumping. Modified plyo moves If you absolutely have to jump in your workouts, try to land as softly as possibleâ€"this can actually increase the difficulty and intensity of your workout. Alternatively, try doing some exercises in short bursts. The Tabata method is  a great variation of a high intensity interval workout that only takes 4 minutes.  Pick an exercise that challenges you (boxing, push ups or half-cobra pushups,  crunches, lunges) and go as hard as you can for 20 seconds. Then allow yourself  10 seconds of rest, and repeat this seven times. Additionally, add weights to your  workouts to increase intensity and burn even more!

How to Prepare for Your Next Phone Interview Image via https://www.pexels.com Find the Right Space Whenever you have a phone interview, it’s important to give some thought ahead of time to where you want to conduct it. You’ll want to find a quiet space, both so that you don’t get distracted while you’re talking and to ensure that there’s no background noise that will make it hard for your interviewer to hear you. If your apartment tends to be quiet during the day, that can be a good choice. Otherwise, you could try reserving a private room at your school’s library, or find a quiet spot on campus where you’re unlikely to be disturbed. Make sure that, wherever you choose, you have decent service in that spot; the last thing you’ll want is for your interview to end early because your phone dropped the call. It’s also a good idea to get to your chosen location early so that you don’t feel rushed or flustered when you answer the phone. Double-Check the Details Before your interview, make sure that you double-check all of the details of the arrangement. If your interviewer is calling you, make sure that they have the right number on hand to prevent any mishaps. If you’ll be calling them, repeat back their number when you’re setting up the interview to be sure that you have it right. In addition, if you’re interviewing with a company in a different area, check to make sure that you and your interviewer are referring to the same time zone when setting up the interview. As well as preventing awkward miscommunications, double-checking these details will also show your interviewer that you’re professional and conscientious. Have Your Resume Ready One benefit of having an interview over the phone is that you’ll be able to keep your resume and any other useful documents in front of you while you talk. It’s a good idea to print out a copy of your resume or to have it pulled up on your computer for the interview, as it will give you a point of reference while you’re talking. Even if you never need to look at it, just having it in front of you will be an added reassuranceâ€"if you’re worried about blanking on some of your responsibilities for a past job, for instance, you know that you can easily check. Have the Job Description in Front of You In addition to your resume, it’s also a good idea to pull up the job description on your computer or print it out so you can reference it occasionally during the phone interview. In addition to giving you some guidance when telling the interviewer why you would be a good fit for the position, you’ll also be able to reference some of the specifics of the job posting during your conversation, which will show your interviewer that you’ve given some thought to the position. Make a List of Questions As with any interview, make sure that you go into it with a list of questions to ask your interviewer. Do some research on the company and the position ahead of time to help you come up with informed, thoughtful questionsâ€"and to ensure that you don’t ask any obvious questions that are already answered on the companys website. For a phone interview, you may want to write out your questions and have them out in front of you to ensure that you don’t forget anything. This will help relieve some of the pressure of interviewing, as you’ll have everything you want to ask sitting right in front of you. Be Ready to Take Notes As you’re preparing for your phone interview, make sure that you have a plan for jotting down notes during the conversation. While you can use your laptop for this, it may be better to use a pen and notepad, to avoid having your interviewer become distracted by the sound of your typing. Have everything set up a few minutes beforehand so you don’t get distracted by looking for a clean sheet of paper once your interview is already underway. Even if you’re not a big fan of phone interviews, with a little preparation they can become far less intimidating. If you feel ready for your phone interview, you’ll be more likely to sound professional and prepared over the phoneâ€"and you’ll have an even better chance of snagging that job.
